Getting Married - Spray Tan 101

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You might be considering a spray tan for your big day but have concerns. Will it make you look orange? Will it stain your beautiful white dress? These are common questions, and we'll address them along with other things you should know.

Will you turn orange?

I always suggest a trial tan before the wedding day to ensure you're happy with the color. An orange tan can develop due to one (or more) of these three reasons:

  1. The solution doesn't complement your skin tone. The artist should consider your undertones and choose the best solution accordingly. If you have a warm undertone, adding more warmth could result in an orange hue.

  2. Too much solution was applied, leading to oversaturation and an orange appearance.

  3. The solution was left on too long, also causing oversaturation and an orange hue.

The best way to avoid these mistakes is by choosing a reputable spray tan artist with experience in wedding tans.

Will your dress get stained?

Spray tan can transfer to clothing due to two reasons:

  1. Friction: This can cause exfoliation, which removes the tan from you and onto the clothing item causing the friction. A dress with a rough or textured underarm area can cause your tan to transfer onto it.

  2. Bronzer: This is another reason to get a spray tan two days before your wedding. It ensures the bronzer (the color immediately applied to your skin) has had enough time to be absorbed and washed off. This is the primary cause of tan transfer onto clothing.

Ensure you thoroughly rinse off the spray tan solution to avoid any issues.

Do you have to do a trial tan?

No, it's not mandatory. However, not having a trial tan risks not achieving the color or depth of tan you desire. You can always have a trial tan before an event like an engagement party, bachelorette, or vacation to get the most value for your money.
